![]() ![]() Neurons that automatically fire when in the state of observation of another’s actions are called mirror neurons, and these neurons are believed to be the basis for empathy. The binaural beat is often used for the purposes of meditation. The brain will automatically perceive the illusory tone, align the brainwaves, and produce a new frequency. Binaural beats, experienced through earphones, provide two different tones in each ear, such as 200 Hz in one ear and 205 Hz in the other ear. ![]() Through the synchronization of brain waves, we can achieve profound states of deep relaxation. Delta and theta, two of the five brain waves, automatically synchronize cortical brain rhythms when listening to music. Sounds produce vibrations that alter brain waves. Most of us naturally tap our feet or move our body when listening to a particular type of music, demonstrating how the body naturally or organically interprets tunes. Neurons fire at different frequencies depending on in-coming data. BRAIN WAVES & NEURONSīrain waves, measured in hertz (Hz), are produced by synchronized electrical pulses from a multitude of neurons, each in communication with one another, ranging from low to high frequency. However, in recent times, researchers have taken a closer, and more scientific, look at the importance of music and sound, and in order to fully appreciate the research, we will need to briefly visit neuroscience, specifically, brain waves, mirror neurons, cranial nerves (just one), and the nervous system. Connecting music to health and well-being has largely relied on anecdotal reporting. The why behind this power remains, to some degree, a mystery. Our capacity to enjoy and create music is a ubiquitous human trait. If it didn’t, Hollywood would have little to no interest in its investment and inclusion. Without their signature sound effects and/or music, many films would lose their magic. The soundtrack is often as important as the story, cinematography, dialogue, script and direction. Immediately, almost everyone connects with and recalls the unmistakable and ominous sound of the shark in the water or the horrifying, repetitive shriek used in the infamous shower scene. Just bring to mind the movie Jaws or Psycho. Audio, strategically layered, affects visceral reactions and the contextual information the viewer is able to comprehend about a film’s subject matter. In addition to crashing waves, most people enjoy the sound of a babbling brook, rainfall and waterfalls (e.g., Niagara Falls) and find them soothing, whereas the sounds associated with heavy city traffic, and of sirens and alarms as jarring.įilmmakers manipulate our emotions with the power of sound. ![]() An audio recording or a video depicting crashing waves along a shoreline has been repeatedly shown to give rise to feelings of calmness and relaxation. Our brains are hardwired to respond positively to nature especially water, and when we cannot be near it, we can re-create and appreciate it through technology. In fact, there is almost a constant, ambient sound of earthquakes and singing whales, as well as wind, waves and storms. Sound also exists within the deepest part of the ocean in which we would assume would be one of the quietest locations on earth. Music, voices, nature and other sources of sound surround us in our daily lives. As with language, music involves combining the perception and production of hierarchically arranged sequential information. Depending on the type of music we are listening to, we can feel energized, mellow, happy, sad, nostalgic, aroused, loving, angry, powerful, peaceful and/or a combination of any of these emotions. But, what is music, exactly? Music, simply stated, is a sequence of coordinated sounds. While interest in music is universal, musical taste is an individual experience and tends to be heavily influenced by one's generation and culture. It creates a sensory experience that brings us back in time, recalling memories otherwise long forgotten. ![]() Music evokes and often intensifies emotions. This can be a high-school dance, beach party, cross-country drive, graduation, wedding, or any other memorable event. It has a distinct and unique ability to evoke emotions, trigger memories, and magnify social experiences. From our first days to our last, the love for and appreciation of music prevail spontaneously and effortlessly. It knows no age, time, or cultural bounds. Music plays an integral role in our everyday lives. Music has been known to capture a mood, punctuate an experience, stamp a time! To enjoy, neither formal training in theory nor practice is required. Whether we travel around the world or back in time, we will find music. Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." -Plato ![]()
